Movie Name: Intoxication
Director Name: Kristina Schippling / Matthias A. K. Zimmermann
Hi Kristina! Welcome to SIFF!
1. What was your inspiration for this movie?
INTOXICATION – Chemistry of Illusions« originated from a fascination with the darker side of Berlin’s urban culture and the psychological depths of two characters who fail in their own abyss and mutual manipulations. The combination of art, states of intoxication, and extreme situations reveals the tension between illusion and reality, examining how far we can go for freedom and self-expression.
2. While intoxication is a great movie, how is it relevant to the situation of the protagonist?
Intoxication reflects the inner states of both Kara and Malina. Kara uses substances to expand her artistic creativity, while Malina seeks deeper spiritual insights through LSD experiences. Intoxication symbolizes not only escape but also the search for truth, culminating in their art and intense relationship. It also becomes clear that the book accompanying the short film is a book against drug abuse.
3. What makes this movie stand out among all others?
The film stands out through its psychological depth, the fusion of artistic expression with Berlin nightlife, and mystical elements. The combination of thriller aspects with visual, mystical storytelling creates a captivating atmosphere that draws viewers into the glittering and dark sides of the city. The film is also at the cutting edge of technology, as AI was used to create it.
4. How do you think this movie will be relatable and connect with the audience?
Themes like self-discovery, freedom, personal conflicts, and moral decisions are universal and emotionally gripping. The protagonists are relatable through their flaws and their desire for redemption. The audience will identify with their choices and their urge for self-realization.
5. Do you think the state of Malina is justified, as she is staying away from the truth?
Malina’s actions are understandable due to her insecurities and fears. She often acts manipulatively to escape her failed career, but this only leads to more entanglements and danger. This shows how her own decisions simultaneously burden and drive her.
6. How do you think the movie relates to karma, self-discovery, and the connectivity between life and art?
Karma and self-discovery pervade the story of Kara and Malina. Their entanglements and crimes lead them to confront themselves, with the consequences of their actions contributing to self-awareness. Art also provides them with a way to explore their destinies and come to terms with their inner reality.
7. “Intoxication” is a wonderful movie. However, what’s your opinion about Kara and Malina? What message do you wish to send across via them?
Kara and Malina embody the contrasts of impulsivity and calculation, artistic freedom and selfish ambition. Their relationship is a blend of love and power games, inviting the audience to reflect on themes like trust, forgiveness, and the limits of freedom and responsibility.
8. Do you believe two females can be friends? If so, then why?
Friendship between women is a complex theme in the film. Kara and Malina demonstrate that a deep bond can exist even through conflicts and emotional crises that they share and grow from. This friendship gains significance through mutual support in challenging times.
9. Are you planning for your next project?
Yes, we already have some ideas. We want to continue exploring themes of psychology and urban myths in connection with digital media, integrating more multimedia elements into future projects.
